How to change your name with VA (Veterans Affairs)
Married or divorced and updating your accounts? Here's how VA takes a name change, from its own help page.
VA's steps
Two updates: call DMDC to change your name in DEERS, then mail VA a letter with your photo ID and marriage certificate or decree (to your medical center and to each benefits office that pays you). Not online.
Have these ready
- A copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order (most companies ask for one).
- Your updated driver's license or ID, if you have it. Social Security comes first, then the DMV.
- Your account number, and the name the account is in now.
Let Sasha handle the letters
Sasha writes and signs your name change letter for VA and every other company on your list, with your certificate attached. It can even print and mail it to VA for you: no printer, no stamps. It also keeps track of who's done. The checklist is free.
More government & benefits
Checked against VA's own page in October 2026. Companies change their process; confirm on their site or by phone before you send anything. Sasha isn't affiliated with VA.
