IRS's steps
Nothing separate to file: the IRS uses your Social Security name, so update Social Security before you file. Ask employers to correct any W-2 in your old name.
Have these ready
- A copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order (most companies ask for one).
- Your updated driver's license or ID, if you have it. Social Security comes first, then the DMV.
- Your account number, and the name the account is in now.
Let Sasha handle the letters
Sasha writes and signs your name change letter for IRS and every other company on your list, with your certificate attached. It also keeps track of who's done. The checklist is free.
