H&R Block's steps
The IRS rejects a return if your name doesn't match your Social Security record. Change your name with Social Security first, or file under your previous name until it's done.
Have these ready
- A copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order (most companies ask for one).
- Your updated driver's license or ID, if you have it. Social Security comes first, then the DMV.
- Your account number, and the name the account is in now.
Let Sasha handle the letters
Sasha writes and signs your name change letter for H&R Block and every other company on your list, with your certificate attached. It also keeps track of who's done. The checklist is free.
